On Wednesday and Thursday, the Water and Fire Feature were installed as a part of the Marvin Pierson Memorial Plaza. The fountain pool was filled and the fire was lit just before Mrs. Alberici completed her round.
We are nearly completed with the work in the ornamental beds which is the final piece in the puzzle. Becky should complete this work next week.

Pierson Memorial Update(Coming to a close)
The Pierson Memorial Plaza is nearing completion. We took major strides this week in closing out the work that the Grounds Maintenance staff has been responsible to complete. Irrigation was completed and recharged. Becky has been busy with placement of trees with the help of our staff. She has also been involved in planting the many shrubs that are included in the new design. The lawn area was shaped, raked and sodded with some great looking fescue from Keeven Brothers. We still have some adjustments to make in the irrigation system to insure that the heads are covering the areas that we want covered. A couple of the areas need some additional settling near some heads and valve boxes and will be sodded early next week. Becky has to plant a few more shrubs and has annuals, perennials and herbs to add to the landscape area. The contractor is sealing the asphalt in front of the club on Monday weather permitting. The only other item that we have is for the fire and water feature to be completed, shipped and then installed. We hope this will occur within the next two weeks.

Pierson Memorial Update
The staff worked feverishly on a number of different Pierson Memorial jobs Monday. Hand digging to install the irrigation was completed on the two small lawn areas next to the loading area as was the last ornamental bed near the casual entrance. Installation of pipe and heads on a couple of the beds is taking place on Wednesday. The areas were not large and there were too many wires and pipes in the small areas to safely utilize a trencher. We still have to add 4 additional heads to the main lawn area and the trenching required to install the irrigation pipe for the system. This will hopefully get completed this week as we make a major push in trying to get the lawn sodded by the end of this week or early during the week of April 9th.
The staff prepared the long ornamental bed between the main parking lot and the delivery area. The soil was tilled a couple of times and compost was added and tilled a couple more times. On Becky's direction and assistance, Green Giant Arborvite were planted to provide a screen between the main lot and the delivery area.
Additional tilling and planting will take place over the next couple days around the formal entrance area. The main dining room bed should be planted today and if rain holds off the living room bed will be completed on Wednesday. We will also continue our work in the ornamental areas around the casual entrance. The beds still need soil hauled in and will require a great deal of tilling with a lot of compost that will be required to improve the overall heath of the plantings. I would expect the trees and shrubs for this area will be planted next week. Perennials ordered for this area are to arrive sometime during the week of the 16th.
The painters from Bazan Painting were here and epoxy the fountain pool/pedestal as well as polyurethane the handrails. They came back on Tuesday and completed their task.
The lighting for the handrails should be installed in the next couple of days.
I have a call into our plumbing contractor regarding an approximate arrival date of the water and fire feature.
Asphalt sealing of the circle area and the main drive area that connects the circle is scheduled to be completed on Monday, April 16.

Pierson Plaza update
Work continues on the Pierson Memorial Plaza. The handrails are near completion. They must be grouted so they will be secure and then caulked at the base so it blends in with the sidewalk. The handrails and fountain pool and base are to be painted on Monday. The lighting company has been in most of the week and has completed a majority of their work. The up lights and plaza path lighting should come on this evening. The handrails lights will be installed after the handrails are painted. Wiring and drilling have been completed in preparation for the small light installation. The staff worked today on extending the small landscape wall where the old steps that led from the parking lot to the main entrance. We are extending the height of the wall slightly to bring the grade up to the level of the parking lot. Additional grading was completed on the turf area around the plaza and along the walkway. Irrigation will be installed early next week and we hope to lay sod before next weekend. We will also be incorporating soil and compost in the planting areas. Once the beds are tilled and ready to go, we will begin planting. The entire circle area is scheduled to be seal coasted on Monday, April 16th. We will still have some planting to do on the casual entrance beds since some of the perennials for those areas are not to be shipped

Skip moving some dirt today in the front lawn. We did a lot of hand raking along the curbs and plaza area in getting the proper grade set. |

Pierson Project update
Soil was moved around the living room and main dining room ornamental planting beds this week in preparation for our lighting contractor to install the walkway and building up lighting next week. Once the lighting is installed, we will begin preparations for tilling the ornamental beds and incorporating copious amounts of compost in them to improve the soil. The staff was busy installing the changes to the ornamental bed irrigation system for the casual entrance beds. What grass is remaining on the front lawn was sprayed with non-selective herbicide as well as selective herbicides in an effort to kill the remaining grass and weaken the bermuda grass as much as possible. The dead material will be stripped off, the area and will then be finished graded and sodded. I hope the lawn work will be completed by April 6th. Some of the plant material is beginning to arrive. I hope to have the plantings completed during the week of April 9th as we try to manage our golf course work with our project work. A large number perennials will be going into the casual entrance beds and are not expected here for delivery until around the 3rd week of April. We will get those beds ready, will do a light mulching to improve their look and have them ready for Becky to plant when the plants arrive.
The brick facade and cap was placed on the fountain pool area during the middle of the week. The handrails are being installed over the next few days for the casual entrance area. The handrails will be painted black. Currently they have a white primer on them. Additional electrical work took place this week as well.
The handrails and pool bottom are scheduled to be painted on Monday, April 1st.
The water and fire feature are being fabricated and we are hoping that everything will be completed by
April 21st which is the day of our Glen Echo Forever Bunker Restoration Event.

Pierson Memorial update
The finish line is in sight for the Pierson Memorial Plaza. Our staff was busy this week laying rock into the areas that were torn up by the new curbing and drainage/conduit cross cuts that were necessary during the construction. Asphalt was laid in these areas this past Thursday.
Our plumbing contractor hooked up our water and gas lines. The electrician from Kay Bee was out and did more of his rough in work required for operation of the pump and lights for the fountain.
Our staff was beginning the process of getting the grade set in the two ornamental beds in front of the living room and dining room area but the rain stopped that work Friday at noon. This work will be completed early in the week so our lighting contractor will be able to do their work later this coming week. Once that work is complete, we have to till in some nice compost so Horticulturist Becky and staff can get the plants put in place and get the area mulched.
Irrigation must be completed in the ornamental beds in front of the casual entrance as well as the club lawn area. Dirt work is still needed to be completed for the front lawn so it can sodded as well as the curb area needs some back filling as well.
The limestone cap for the fountain pool was delivered on Thursday from the quarry in Indiana. An interesting fact that I was told about this quarry. There is a section of the quarry that the stone for the Empire State Building was used. his section of quarry is only used for the Empire State Building when repairs are needed. I am waiting to here back from our brick layer regarding the fountain facade and cap work. I would expect them to be here within the next week or so.
The circle area will be completely seal coated after all of our work is completed which will improve the look of the old asphalt along with the new patched areas.
